i am using an Ikelite compass. i removed the "back", took the strap out
and layed a piece of thin surgical tubing where the strap had been.
Press the back down, replace the screws and voila ... it certainly is
not attractive but it works (so far) ... i am curious if anyone else 
has done something similar and experienced a problem.
