A series of field trials has been undertaken in the UK, under the auspices
of the Health and Safety Executive, to  assess the different devices
commonly used by divers, such as SMBs, flags etc and their general
effectiveness in the field.

As the report shows, the best thing seems to be a simple yellow flag!
