Boron is neat stuff. FYI, most commercial nuclear reactors use boron in solution for reactivity control (PWR's that is). Boron added to water to form B3HO3. Boron-10 (about 19.7% in nature) is the isotope with a 2E6 barn thermal neutron crosscection. It is used to hold down positive roe during new fuel load and is diluted about 3 ppm (natural boron, not enriched) per EFPD (Effective Full Power Days). When boron gets to zero, it's time to re-fuel (replace about one thrid of the fuel assemblies. Gosh! I just love this talk. Better diving through chemistry! p.s. boric acid and alcohol makes great ear drops. p.p.s. 1% boric acid (1748 ppm) makes nice eye drops.
