Subject: Re: DIR FAQ
List:

The need for a FAQ is so obvious that I don't feel the need to respond to some
of the more counter-productive comments being posted. If the List truly wants
to get the message out in a more palpable and readily available form, it will
focus its energies towards this area. If not, than the whining should stop on
why more people just don't "get it.". This is one of those issues that
everyone talks about "doing something right" but when it comes to right down to
it, would rather argue than do something constructive towards that end.

Yes, there are truly some fine web sites out there already that address many of
the questions related to DIR, but the answers to most questions (pick any month
from this List) are either not readily apparent, or the information is scattered
about in many places and are incomplete or not explained very well. While not
wishing to impugn any of the efforts and hard work by the authors of these sites
(which I myself enjoy visiting), I think we can do much better. There needs to
be one source of complete information regarding equipment configs, etc., that a
newcomer can go to (or be sent, as many people still do not have web access) for
information instead of having to hunt it all down from many places and trying to
decipher some of the more ambiguous explanations.

Sean Stevenson has offered to take this project on with everyone's support, and
I have also received a private e-mail for free server space should this be
necessary. Of course, optimally I think the FAQ should be posted to one of the
current DIR sites to build on previous efforts by list members, but the offer is
a gracious one nonetheless. Many people on this List see the merit of doing a
better job at disseminating the message and have volunteered their help. As
with most projects though, it requires everyone's support in order to be a
success.
