Subject: Re: FW: Hose Length - was: DIR bits & pieces
Paul, no matter what reg I am using, my lenghts are 7 feet, 24 inches,
24 inches and 22 inches for the hp hose. JJ uses a shorter HP hose, like
20, and I think is using Scuba Pro back regs rigged on the end of the
swivel. Sometimes we both use US Divers back regs.

Even when I use Scuba Pro regs, I rig them off of the side of the reg (
not the end) and still use the same length as for the APEKS or other non
swivel reg. Personally, I use the APEKS regs both first and second my
back ( non air balanced for the backup) other than with the rebreather
where I use USD, but use the Scuba Pro for all safeties and most stages.
You can leave a Scuba Pro in the water for months and it works like new,
but my personal anal retentiveness does not allow me to have swivels on
my back, thin DINS, protruding regs, unadjustable regs ( I run very low
pressures on everything) or regs that crack too easily to breathe.

The reason I leaeve the 24 inches is so that IF it were to become
necessary to share the short hose, I have enough hose to do it. I also
do not want the thing pulling at my mouth if I have to use it. I want to
be able to turn my head fully to the left. If you run the hose from the
reg downward,( through a strain relief) and then across, there is some
"extra hose" back there that can extend it when you need it.

As for elbos, swivels or anything else - do not use them - they are
unnecessary and risky, and you can not get too cute on short hosing -
you need to look at the real drag issues in the water while moving vs
funcionality, not what sounds good on the surface. I give myself plenty
of room on everything, and you need to have hose lenght that do not
"hose" you if you have to change a reg at the last minute. You need
reasonably standard stuff in this regard ( my fist lesson from Parker
Turner), and it is generally available now.
