I've got two subjects to make comments upon, so I hope no-one minds my adding them into the same message - saves garbage on the intercom! 1)ASPIRIN. This drug acts as an anticoagulant by interfering with platelet function in the bloodstream. Although there have been many suggestions that anticoagulants could have a minor preventative effect on DCI, what I would like to know-before sending everyone down to the pharmacy for junior 'ASPRO'- is: has anyone tested the side-effects of Aspirin, or similar anticoagulants, under pressure? As we all know, even on shallow dives our entire bodies are under a greater pressure than normal which will undoubtedly effect enzyme kinetics. What this all means is: it may be safer to prevent DCI by using O2, and safer diving practices than buggering about with our body's metabolism. 2)O2 CLEANING OF REGULATORS. For those persons out there who choose to use regulators 'out of the box' for nitrox and 100% O2: I have recently purchased a shiny new cyklon 5000 and it clearly states in the Posiedon booklet (also valid for Jetstream) that they discourage the use of their regulators with O2 contents >21% (air). They go on to emphasise the risk of serious deterioration of the valves and the risk of explosion. So, ON YOU OWN HEADS BE IT!. Safe swimming! Dr Ali Lawrie.
