Here in the PNW, there are a great number of nets in use/disuse/abandonment.
When they get "dirty", some of the nefarious types will simply cut the lead
lines and floats off, and let it go. These rogue nets become rolling balls
of death, trapping and killing as they roll around. In this low vis, they
can be almost impossible to see until you are in them. Getting out of one of
these nets with a knife is difficult at best, impossible at worst. Shears
make quick work of extraction, with out the additional "knot tightening"
effect of pulling and sawing with a knife.

I have been carrying trauma shears in the GI knife pocket sold by Halcyon.
It holds them in the correct place, so not only I, but my buddy (and
everyone else that dives DIR) know exactly where my shears are. I haven't
lost a set yet, even though the top of the pocket is open, and there is no
retention device. They fit snugly, and the friction seems to be enough to
hold them.
