I do repairs on divers B.C.'s, backpacks, etc. on an industrial machine. =
I have replaced many broken fastex type buckles that have cracked or =
failed. I have personally broken more than one two inch wide fastex =
type side-release buckle, and broken several of the one inch size. They =
become brittle after prolonged exposure to the sun and crack quite =
easily if you step on one, particularly if it's cold. (The manufacturer =
will claim that it was "A bad batch of mix.)

I dive with a single piece of webbing threaded through my backplate. The =
only way to go! I have little problem getting out of the rig by floating =
it over my head... I just breath off the long hose and hunch if forward, =
head down. Don't forget to release your low pressure dry suit hookup and =
flip your backup reg. off from around your neck... that can be =
embarrassing!
