Curt, I used to dive with the straps crossing behind my head. At the time I was not aware of the DIR system. The reason I was told at the time was to help ensure that the straps do not slip off my shoulders and to keep the harness snug. The DIR harness does not cross at the neck. It comes straight off the backplate over your shoulder and back down to the backplate at your hip. Several things result from this: - The harness is significantly more comfortable. The weight is carried by your shoulders not against your neck. I was amazed at the increase in mobility and comfort once I added the crotch strap and no longer crossed the straps. When the straps cross behind your head and are tight as is required when you do not have a crotch strap your shoulders are held back against your backplate almost as if someone had you in a Full Nelson. This affects mobility. I used to get some slight bruising on my shoulder on occasion due to the weight of the harness digging into a small area on my shoulders near my neck. - The DIR harness is easier to remove. Once the crotch strap is removed, it is easier to get your arm underneath to remove the harness. And to slip it off your shoulders. Myth: Unless you cross the harness at your shoulders it will slip off during the dive. This does not happen. Once you add the crotch strap the shoulder straps can be left relatively loose. This makes donning and doffing much easier. Once the crotch strap is tightened the shoulder straps are help snuggly against your body. Note: The crotch strap is absolutely required on the DIR harness. The harness does not work properly without the crotch strap. A 2" crotch strap seems to work best.
