Susan, The deeper you go the more you need a scooter to reduce gas consumption and CO2 build up. The logistics of placing stage and safety bottles for a swim *in* in addition to a swim out would be more complicated than necessary. An exception to this would be an extreme bounce dive for the purpose of setting some "record". In that case you need a shovel. Without a deep, long range, reliable scooter (Gavin) there is very little deep horizontal (Cave, big wreck, etc) diving that is logistically feasible. I know because I don't have one (yet). Just wondering if a scooter is an integral part of DIR since most of the dives in the caves, ocean, (Brittanica),etc seem to be using one? I know it is not mandatory, but the majority appear to be using them. Does anyone swim any more? What about deep dives below the scooters capabilities?
