.What about the plastic snap-type clips (the ones you squeze both sides of
to release)? Has anyone had trouble with these (I understand they may not
function well in cold water)? Is there a stailess steel equivalent?

I've had those plastic squeeze clips break on a couple of my
backpacks. (The backpacking kind, not the diving kind). So, I'd assume
that if you drop a tank or a set of doubles on one, they'd break. I'd
stick to a standard metal quick release buckle, myself. At least if
they bend, you can stretch them back with a pair of pliers.
