Subject: Re: Who controls deco?
This tops your deep air post. Travis : two strokes leave Monteal on the
train to New York. One has a wet bottom timer, one has a dry bottom
timer. Who gets there first?

I think Brian's question was more to do with a discrepancy between the
timers of two divers with the same plan. Most likely this would be due
to the timers starting at different points, like when one person's
starts when it gets splashed with water and the other doesn't begin
until 5 feet or whatever. So even though they started the dive at the
same time the timers are different. Then if you're supposed to leave
the stop at a run time of 35 and yours reads 35 and his reads 33, you
have three choices. 1.) Your timer says go up so you go up and leave
him to deco by his timer. 2.)Your timer says go up so you go up as a
team. 3.) You wait and go by his timer for the deco.
The problem I've found in situations where the bottom timers aren't
synchronized is getting to the first stop. If my timer is the first one
to reach the end of our planned bottom time and I signal for us to go up
and he thinks I just want extra travel time to get to the stop. I'm
climbing to make my first stop and he's sightseeing. This happened to
me once and after that I started including that in the predive
plan/check. I'm of the opinion that you go by the timer that is higher
and for deco the other person just use stop lengths instead of run
times. It's the more consevative way, the fast person is doing the
proper deco and the other is doing it as if he had the 2 more minutes of
bottom time. Then for the last stop we do the extra couple of minutes
on oxygen; it's not necessary but just a little added margin anyways.
