This is inconsistant with reality and may lead to a bad representation. Only the correct proceedures and use of the correct gases will allow diving with no perceptible loss of vital capacity as measured by athletic perfomance. I do those dives with 30 ox 35 helium with decent and ascent rates which are slow and with effective deco, and have no problem with my pool or running times. I can get the same result on a massive exposure in deep water as well if done correctly. Done improperly, the loss is staggering. As a side note, oddly enough, a tad of hyuperbaric oxygen ( as implied by these dives ) actually can work in favor of the joints, wheras too much or too high or often of a dose sharply reduces vital capacity at the lungs and in the entire vascolar system, not to mention the extreme damage done by nitrogen or by inadequate decompression or too much deco at the intermediate steps. I would certainly not dive air or nitrox and any depth and expect to see good perfomance the next day in a race. Keep in mind that I do the equivalent of an olympic distance trialthelon most every day of my life.In fact, I did one this morning before work. Short term the idea is to avoid muscle and lung damage, long term is to avoid bone and connective damage. -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
