I would be careful about painting people with too board a stroke here.    I
don't think it is so much that people (in the larger sense) choose to believe
idiocy as it is that they respect the agencies and instructors that train them
and the recreational system is the only one presented in the classroom.
Hence, it boils down to more of an awareness issue than a choice issue.   Though
there are probably many exceptions (all of which you could expound on), by and
far I believe this to be the case for the common person.

p.s.  I concur with you about the issue of saving money with DIR though.    You
are entirely correct.
