Gary, the only thing that saved me from bondage wings is that they did not make them before I wised up, but I got stuck with other things that are nearly as bad. The other general thing that saved me from most of the severe stupidity was that there was no such thing as "tech" instruction, and that I drew Alton Hall as my cavern instructor and Parker Turner as my cave instructor. Gas we self taught and then had the benefit of Gavin's knowlege from his Navy rebreather design work, and Dr. Bill for deco. Our first tables were raw Buhlmann in a DBase spread sheet and we had to take the gas to get it analyzed on a spectrometer.
