Actually, if you look at it, the amount of code controlling an electronic rebretather is pretty small - usually a few Kilobytes, at most - thousands of times smaller than your typical Windows application. With so few "function points", you actually can completely eliminate firmware bugs. When was the last time you had your microwave oven fail due to a software bug? They don't - they fail for hardware reasons. That's about the same level of complexity as a rebreather controller.
