MISSING DIVERS FEARED DROWNED A MASSIVE air and sea search was continuing last night after two divers failed to return from an expedition. Fears are growing for the men after a seven-hour search involving lifeboats, fishing vessels and a coastguard helicopter failed to find any sign of them. The divers travelled to the spot, 21 miles off the coast of Worthing, on the boat Spartacus. A year ago two divers died after they went missing on an expedition from the same vessel. The latest rescue mission started at 11.30am yesterday when Solent Coastguard received a distress call from the Spartacus saying the two divers had not returned. The two men in their late twenties had been exploring a wreck with nine other divers in water up to 54 metres deep. The rescue helicopter was immediately scrambled and a spotter plane sent from Lydd Airfield in Kent. Lifeboats from Shoreham and Selsey were also launched along with the Brighton Marina-based fishery protection boat Watchful and the angling boat Riptide. An RNLI spokesman said: "The conditions at the time were quite lumpy. They could have drifted a long way very quickly. "But if they're still under water it's very unlikely they are still alive. The water is very deep out there for scuba diving." Spartacus captain Timothy Bennetto said conditions were 'textbook' when the team of divers from Essex left Brighton Marina on his boat at 7.30am. He said divers usually spent no longer than 90 minutes under-water and he raised the alarm when the experienced pair failed to surface. He said: "I'm convinced they never surfaced. I didn't see any lifebuoy. The coastguard search was very thorough and in those conditions you could see for 20 miles." Mr Bennetto, of Cissbury Avenue, Peacehaven, insisted safety was the responsibility of the diving marshal. He added: "My business is to take them out there and bring them back." Coastguards last night voiced concerns that time was running out. Bob Terry, watch manager at Solent Coastguard, said: "We are undertaking a thorough search of the area and there are a number of boats in the area that are helping too. "Concerns are growing for their safety as they have been missing for a time." --------------5CA637E7843F67EC52878D93-- -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
