We started out doing the same thing Rod does: using regulators right out of the box for O2 decompression. We never experienced any problems whatsoever when we did this. We now O2-clean our regulators, primarily because I recognise my own limits of experience/understanding with regard to O2 combustions, and for lack of a clear understanding, I opt to play it conservatively. If anyone decides to flame Rod for his practice, I'd like to hear about specific examples of combustions, if there are any (rather than the theory most of us are already familiar with). One thing a friend of mine told me: After using the main valve on a large cylinder to regulate the flow when decanting oxygen to scuba cylinders for a few months, the teflon seat on the main cylinder valve had disintegrated. Since hearing that, I now use a stainless-steel in-line needle valve to regulate the flow rate when decanting oxygen. I've not had any problems with any of my valve seats.
