I'd also like to hear what happened, but I'm responding because things can indeed happen anywhere. People have embolized in 3 feet of water in swimming pools. They are not completely safe. White Star is a nice park, a nice quarry, and a nice place to dive. Although most of it is not deep, it is one of the deeper quarries in the area (other than Gilboa). Many advanced class deep dives are done at this quarry, as well as other open water training dives. The deep part is in the 70' range. Like many inland lakes and quarries in the area, there is a silty bottom that is easily stirred up by poor finning and bouyancy control typical of new divers. Visibility can be anything from 20' to nothing, depending on weather conditions (run-off from rain) and the results of student divers being in the water ahead of your group. Ok, so we're all tough tech divers here (ha!) and low vis and cool temperatures don't bother us. They do bother less experienced divers. A lot of things can lead to trouble. Letting the little things escalate without taking care of them can turn a nuisance into a problem. Panic is responsible for far too many diving deaths and injuries. No body of water is safe.
