Someone was asking how the different 'national' clubs think about the use of mixed gases for everybody. Well, last week there was the 'Salon Nautique' at the Paris exhibition centre, there everything which could be related to water is present(ed). There was also a presentation by the FFESSM (Federation Francaise d'Etudes et des Sports Sous-Marin - the French 'BSAC'). I asked a guy there, what the FFESSM was thinking about Nitrox, trimix, IWR, etc. I don't know if he was taking me really serious, as this exhibition is more something for people with really recreational interests and not a place where the top-divers (what I'm not either) would go. Anyway. His answers: - the FFESSM stays within the limits of diving on air. It does not teach, certify or encourage the diving on mixed gases. It does not forbid or dis- encourage it either. There is a diving school attached to the FFESSM where they do diving on mixed gases and even rebreathers. The aims of the FFESSM remain the diving on air for recreational purpose. I asked him about more safety with Nitrox but he didn't think that that was of concern for recreational diving. - asked about IWR, he told me to write to the FESSM-medecin to get the answer, he didn't want to answer to this difficult question. That was all I know right now. It seems that this point of view is quite different of the BSAC view. juergen
