I would not exactly call it personal preference. What it is more like,  is 
based on nearly 50 years of NE wreck diving, by people that are and have as 
you put it, intelligence, experience, technical and scientific ability, a 
safety record, and a range of equipment to choose from. They also share it 
freely.

When the DIR people dive in this environment for as long as some of the more 
prolific divers of the area have, I will listen to them as to what is best. 
Until then, I will pick the brains of the divers I most respect in the area, 
and watch how and what they dive.
