Subject: Wing lift capacity?
How much lift do you need out of a set of wings? Is there a formula to
calculate the amount of lift required for a particular gear
configuration? Do you add up the weight of your kit when above water or
below when it is almost neutral?
I dive square profiles in the North Atlantic (USA). I use double 85 ft3
L.P steels (76 lb. full) or 112 ft3 L.P. steels (98 lb. full) for deeper
dives and a neoprene dry suit. I have been taught that I need close to
100 lb. lift capacity out of a set of wings. Yet I see some of you
folks jumping off the boat with 50-60 lb. lift wings and your tanks are
the same or larger than mine. What am I missing here?
Dive safe!

A.J.
