The Nitek will not switch gasses "on its own". It requires two distinctive
and positive moves to complete a switch. As Jim pointed out, you can tell it
which gas to start your dive with by accessing Dive Plan Mode (pg 21). If
you do not do this, it starts the next dive on its' last setting. If you
ended your last dive on mix 3, it starts the next one on mix 3. Well this is
typically O2, so if you fail to tell it mix one and don't check it when you
hit the water, then it will blare warnings as you pass the magic po2 of 1.6.
It will not let you switch to the correct gas until you go back above 1.6.
If you try to switch to a hot mix, it won't let you lock it in (if a gas is
still blinking, its' not locked in). It will now automatically go back to
the last gas. The magic number here is po2 of 1.6
If you don't want to access plan mode, switch the computer back to mix one
(or whichever one you want it to start the next dive with) before you get
out of the water. I just check it as I'm descending and verify the mix
before going below 20 ft.
If you set your o2 for 95 % instead of 99%, it will lock in at 20 ft. no
problem. While it doesn't show decimal points on the po2, it still takes
them into account. Reach a 1.59 po2 and you can lock in.
As far as testing goes, our equipment is tested in actual day to day diving,
by myself and several others with as many scenarios as we can think of.
Sometimes too many scenarios, we would like to keep it much more simple ;-)
However, we can't personally train everyone who uses our equipment, so we
have to expect the worst. It is unfortunate, but very true.
We are always looking for ways to improve and welcome all comments.
Thanks for Buying Dive Rite.
