Hi List,

what is the DIR opinion with wreckers' tools? Many UK wreck divers
favourite pastime is ripping lumps of brass and bronze off wrecks
(portholes and the like).

Tools (mallet, chisel, crowbar & wrench) can supply enough negative
buoyancy to replace a weightbelt. Obviously this is bad:

- if it replaces the weight belt, what happens if the diver drops a mallet
or wrench?
- if it supplements the weight belt, increased BCD filling adds to drag

Disclaimer: I personally don't take anything from wrecks (I don't dive
wrecks that often to waste time knocking lumps out of them) but there are
many who do.

I don't dive DIR, but I am interested to see how it fits into the
philosophy, especially with the recent discussions on aluminium vs. steel
tanks and weight belt vs. no weight or integrated weight. I suppose the
best argument is "don't rip up wrecks", but is there anyone who as come
across an answer?

Regards,

Stuart.
