David,
A rattail file and a few beers later and that 1 inch slot will be a 2 inch
slot ;-)
Chainsaw files are great also and work better on the stainless steel, but it
probably won't be worth spit after using it on your backplate.
More up-to-date backplates have already addressed this too.
