In UK waters a lot of
divers tend towards thick neoprene drysuits. All this can restrict movement
which might make reaching valves harder.

- One should NEVER use thick neoprene suits when diving deep as the lousy=20
bouancy characteristics leads to all sorts of problems with weighing. Check=
=20
the archives for specific reasons or write again. Get a shell suit og a=20
compressed/crushed neoprene suit (I dive DUI CF200) and some decent=20
underwear.

Add to this the loss of dexterity
and hand strength that cold brings, and the fact that cold water divers are
at a higher risk of freeflowing regs and it could all end up going horribly
wrong when trying to shut valves down.

- What I do if I have loads of underwear on and dive with small tanks (2 x=
=20
10L) is that I loosen the waist band before reaching to close my valves.=20
Then there is no problem. You can still close your valves in 10 seconds.

My technique is to leave the isolator on the manifold closed, so that I'm
effectively diving with independant tanks. If I have a freeflow, etc., I'm
not under the same pressure to do something about it. If I reach my valves
then great, but if I don't then it's not a problem, I still have half of my
gas safe.

- Do as above and you won't have to resort to this type of strokery.=20
Independents, which is what you are arguing for, lead to numerous problems.=

Check the archives for a full summary.

A couple of other things. I like to use climbing karabiners on my stage
tanks because they are big and easy to use with cold hands.

- Use piston bolt snaps. These cannot get you jammed and they come in large=
=20
sizes as well as smaller. This is the only acceptable type. I use them in=20
different sizes on my gear. On my (alu) deco bottles I use a type that's 10=
=20
cm long as the deco bottles are large and more cumbersome to move around.=20
On the rest of my gear I use the standard size.

Some people say that they are an
entanglment risk because they open and close so easily, but like my cave
instructor once told me, you shouldn't be close enough to get tangled in
the first place.

- Eeer, shit happens? Heard of Mista Murphy?
