It looks like the idea that the helium values were derived and not tested is just "received wisdom" from the list that's not accurate. Good catch -- and another important reminder to do the research yourself before accepting anything here as true. I just pulled out John Lippman's "Deeper into Diving" and he also mentions experimental trials of Buhlmann's Helium algorithm and cites to Buhlmann's 1967 article "Saturation and desaturation with N2 and He at 4 ATA" in the Journal of Applied Physiology (23:458-62). (Buhlmann himself edited the chapter.) The real answer appears to be that Buhlmann's helium coefficients were not *as well* tested as the nitrogen coefficients -- which makes sense since much of his work (and most of the recent published work in deco theory) is centered more on recreational than mixed gas diving At least we're working toward an accurate base set of facts. Thanks for the heads up. Best regards -- Bill -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'. Send subscribe/unsubscribe requests to `techdiver-request@aquanaut.com'.
