>I can confirm what John is talking about. We had a bad tradegy out here a
couple years back from a guy who thought he was a tech diver.
To this very day its hard to get a charter boat captain out to the Moody.
Although a beautiful Clemson Class destroyer, she is a very serious dive.
And yes, the diver in questions, as well as his son, were not even basic
nitrox certified. A few day after the funeral, I was shocked to find that he
had no nitrox training, let alone entry level technical training. The
company that chartered the boat and lead the wreck dive regularly advertised
" advanced and technical destinations ". Primarily for photography, but
always to advanced local sites.
His doubles were filled with air for this wreck dive just beyong the
recreational limit. I know because I was behind the counter when his
cylinders were filled and vip'ed.
WHY DOES THIS AND SOME OTHER "NON-TECHNICAL" DEATHS become appropriate for
tech diver ? Because an overwhelming percentage of the dive community sees
them as "technical fatalities." Mention doubles, or past 130', or a little
light deco obligation and the accident becomes a "technical death." This
specific one was carefully described in an old AquaCorps, adding the
credentials that it was a "tech death."
my 2 sense.
