Tissues do not necessarily on and off-gas at the same rate (fast or slow). I
had always heard that fat tissue was FAST to on-gas and SLOW to off-gas,
making obesity a risk factor for DCS. Tissue compartments can be any
combination: fast-fast, fast-slow, slow-slow, or slow-fast.

In part, the deep stops slow the ascent, and allow for a gradual reduction in
the pressure gradient. This allows the inert gas absorbed at the deeper
depths to be reduced earlier in the decompression profile.
