Breathing liquids is probably hell on the surfactants in your lungs, which would cause the smaller passages to collapse. Enough of that and you can suffocate, like a victim of drowning dying hours after leaving the water. Not an insurmountable problem, but I bet you catch bronchitis that winter. None of the problems associated with liquid breathing are insurmountable, but it's probably just not worth the trouble and expense. I remember reading that the movie was quite a piece of work to pull off. Wouldn't mind seeing it again. Maybe it's on laserdisc with additional footage on how they made it.
