Subject: RE: Weight belts and backplates

Steve (?),

When my wife first started to dive with backplate, I couldn't convinced her
to lose the drop weights so I got the Halcyon drop weight system for her.

In general, they are very similar to the drop weight systems on any of the
pretend-to-be-tech-BCD systems (Dacor Rig, Zeagle, etc.). Except instead of
using velcro to hold the drop weight pockets in place, there are 2 large
plastic buckles. You must first unclip the buckles, then pull the weight
pockets out. The system is curved to the shape of the hip and lined with
hard plastic so you won't feel the weight on your hip bones.

Lastly, if you dive DIR, there is an integrated D-ring on the left side (for
stages) and an integrated Scubapro buckle (and webbing) on the right side
(for light). Both of these are on the outside of the weight pocket holders.
To mount these holders on, you thread the waist webbing thru and the holders
have sewn-in webbing to attach themselves to the twin (or single tank
adapter) lower bolt, so the weight are very secure.

Just remember that having lots of weight in the front will tend to pull you
face down on surface, so unless you must have the drop weights, look for
alternatives: V-weight / double backplates for twins and weights thread thru
the soft band tank straps for single. etc.

I am also happy to say that I have convinced my wife not to use the drop
weight system any longer. Dive with the webbing a bit loose, and you should
be able to get out of it within seconds.

Hope this helps.
