Forgive me for I have sinned.

Many years ago I was a stroke. Through the teachings of GMI3 and others I
saw the error in my ways. I was soon converted to Hogarthian and DIR
thinking. Every night thereafter I prayed in the direction of Ft
Lauderdale. I became a believer and sold my Zeagle kit, bought OMS
backplate and DiveRite Original wing, replaced my steel stages for
aluminium, replaced shower heads for Apex regulators, bought Barry's Primary
Light, Barry's backups, and George's scooter.

Specifically, in my stroke days, I used CTs for many purposes. I saw the
light here too. I re-configured my kit to avoid this. I even emailed
techdiver outlining how to avoid the use an O-ring in a breakaway
application and avoid a suggested use of a CT. I thought that with this act
that my redemption was now complete.

But alas Jim, deep within my soul, I have this unquenchable craving to use a
CT. Only one application. Uno. I like the elegance of a single fitting
which holds on the mouthpiece and lanyard. My whole body is racked with
guilt but confession is good for the soul.

My backup regulator is just that, it is mine. You cannot have it, I secure
it around my neck in a way that I do not want it to break away. Thus I do
not use a breakaway O-ring on my backup.	I do accept that there is a
possibility that the cable tie may break. If this happens, I may lose the
mouthpiece and the backup will fall away. On the first point, I do not
worry about losing the mouthpiece. Last weekend, my mouthpiece on my 35%
deco bottle failed so I cut it off and did the that phase of deco without a
mouthpiece just to see if it was doable. It was. So what if I lose lanyard
and the backup due to CT breakage? No worse than a breakaway O-ring failing
and perhaps as likely? So I feel I am no worse off than with your kind
suggestion from on high.

Penitently yours.

You know I won't let this lay... ;)

David what you really need to do is to tie an oring to your reg with cave
line and then tie the oring to your neck lanyard tubing. This way you
have a predictable failure point for your second should you need it off
you in a hurry.

It's funny that you use a zip in this situation because it was with
precisely this application that I had a zip tie fail. The reg was hanging
from the lanyard, I heard a "clunk" behind me, I turned around and the
reg had fallen off the neck lanyard and the ziptie was sitting on the
deck. And even after that I had 2 more fail at random times before I
realized that I had a Holy Calling to chase down and destroy the evil
Ziptie empire wherever they may appear.
