Rod- I am reading up on some dive history and ancient texts describe Greek sponge divers using olive oil not only in their ears but also in the mouth and nose. This was to protect the membranes and also when they spit out the oil it would calm the surface water which allowed more light to reach the sponging grounds on the bottom.
