I have just received these details about the circumstances of Bill's fatal dive: Bill was found 600' inside Clearcut Sink. His tanks were empty. Another 400' further in, a stage bottle was found, also empty, and hanging from the ceiling. His buddy was found not far from Ventura - another hole leading into the cave system. The buddy was found on the ceiling, face up, legs down, with a considerable amount of line entwined around his fins. There was a lot of cut line. Bill's computer showed a maximum depth of 107'; his body was found at only 55' depth. The assumption is that Bill and his buddy had entered the cave system, and were into their dive when they became entangled in the line. In attempting to free themselves from the line, they used up more air than would allow them to exit safely. Bill had probably gotten free and tried to help his buddy, and stayed too long, eventually having to abandon his buddy.
