Subject: Re: Jet fins / spring strap
Vinny, the efficiency claims of the fins you see in dive shops are
usually based on forward (in-line) thrust only, and then only using a
standard flutter kick. What you also have to consider is a fins
efficiency when using an anti-silting kick, when using the fin for
attitude control/turning, and when using a DPV. You also do not want
to use an excessively bouyant fin. The ScubaPro Jetfin (or similar,
such as Rockets, Turtles, etc.) is pretty good across the board, as
well as being constructed out of an extremely durable material.

The spring straps allow quick donning and doffing of the fin, and
eliminate the entanglement hazard of having a fin strap end dangling in
the breeze. They were originally made by Farallon, then by Oceanic,
and were discontinued. They are currently available through Jackie
Smith (mixdiver@in*.ne*), or you can make your own. Instructions
can be found on Jim Cobb's site.
