At the time they said they could not treat a diver in the chamber if they had been breathing nitrox. Their argument was pretty weak. If you calculated the OTUs for a recreational nitrox dive, and for the same dive on air, the number of OTUs increase was small in relation to the number you could tolerate for hyperbaric treatment. At the time I thought it was interesting that the number of OTUs from first aid treatment including 100% oxygen was never considered as a barrier to chamber treatment, even though the amount acquired from breathing nitrox on the dive would have precluded treatment. It is also interesting to note that all of the nitrox nay-sayers have done an about face, and the concern about additional OTUs and hyperbaric treatment evaporated. It was all politics.
