Subject: Checkoff lists

I was thinking a little more about about pre-dive preparation. It is fine
and dandy to have a mental checkoff list but come to think of it, I have
never seen a diver use a printed one on the boat. I know that pilots use
checkoff lists as a pro-forma item, why not divers?

I guess the reason why is similar to the reason some folk don't like
seatbelts, its a macho issue, you don't want to look like a numbskull or
neophyte. But I'm not proud and I am thinking of creating one and
laminating it for my use.

This is for my gear and my way of doing things, you all would have to
modify for your stuff. Also this is a first draft, if any of you all see
something I left out, or have suggestions.

Night before trip-

-Run tables.
-Fill tanks and test 02%.
-Inspect drysuit and lube zippers.
-Inspect BC for leaks, frays, overpressure valve and inflator hose.
-Inspect backplate assembly for frays and loose components.
-Inspect all bolt snaps for attachment and function. Lube if required.
-Inspect and clean mask, and check mask straps.
-Inspect fins and straps.
-Inspect and test backup light.
-Inspect and test bottom timer, computer.
-Check charge of Light and Scooter batteries.
-Install wings and backplate on doubles.
-Get some cash for mate=B9s tip.
-Plan food and sufficient beverages for hydration for duration of trip.
-Reading material.
-Run through equipment checkoff list to make sure all items are accounted
for.
-Load car using equipment checkoff list.

Once on the boat-

Prior to sitting: (in order)

-Install regs and open all valves.
-Test %02 on all tanks.
-Check hose routing.
-Breath off of each reg for at least 4 lungfuls.
-Check pressure on all guages.
-Connect BC inflator hose and test.
-Clip off primary to Dring.
-Check and attach liftbag to Dring.
-Check and attach reel to Dring.
-Assemble and test cannister light.
-Install cannister light on belt, lock in place with buckle.
-Attach Lighthead to sholder dring.
-Check backplate wingnuts.
-Position belts, crotchstrap, for easy entry.
-Position second and DS inflator hose for routing and access.
-Get mask wet.
-Position mask, ankle weights, gloves, computers, bags, tools, slates and
stages for access.
-Remove tank bungees

Sit down and: (in order)

-Put on ankle weights.
-Put on fins.
-Put on hood.
-Put on sholder straps
-Put on gloves.
-Put on bottom timer/computer/slates
-Check position of long hose and light cable.
-Attach waist belt
-Attach Crotch strap
-Attach DS inflator and test
-Put on Second, and take 4 breaths
-Put on Longhose, and take 4 breaths
-Sit back, close eyes and visualize the dive for a few moments.
-Spit in mask and put it on.
-Put first in mouth.
-Head to gate like mad raging bull, elbowing fellow divers out of the way
and stepping on their feet.

What did I forget?

   Jim
