The diver in question had several problems, only one of which was the new
and unfamiliar gear configuration. The way Zak phrased his message he
inferred that there is a "TDI doubles patch" you need to get to get
before you can buy doubles.

There are definitely divers who benefit from hands-on instruction on
advanced techniques, and I won't argue with that. But if you take a
single 95 and set it next to a set of twin 45's, there really is not much
of a difference except the twins will feel nicer on your back and more
balanced underwater, plus will give you true redundancy should you feel
you need it. And I will maintain that a small set of doubles are easier
to manage than a single w/pony.

You can be a bad diver with a single or doubles. The only reason I
recommend a single to a new diver is for he or she to get used to air
mgmt. skills by limiting the air supply. If you feel you need to use a
pony for your type of diving, a small set of doubles is the better way to
go.
