Brian,
I would have to disagree with your friend about the 3/8 hose not
breathing very well.  I would guess that the problem is with his second
stage.  I used a 1/2 inch hose for awhile but switched back to the 3/8
after noticing no difference.  The 1/2 is quite a bit stiffer than the
3/8 and in my opinion is a little uncomfortable aroung the neck.
I use VX10 and a G250 second stages.
