It stops the worst fakes; nobody can fake <armantrout@wo*.at*.ne*>
and make it look like you and get away with it.  I believe that was the
kind of fake that was causing the most grief (and still does occasionally
on cavers; somebody did Mike Bruic a lot of grief that way several months
ago).

Granted, there's nothing to stop somebody from setting themselves up as
trout@ho* or whatever, but that's obvious fakery, and they have to go
to the trouble of getting the account set up so they can reply from it,
so that adds a chance of tracing them there.
