Divers-

On Saturday we had another VBTech meeting. We started off talking about
the upcoming dive season and reviewed and planned tech trips coming up.
Big news is all the new big dive boats for our area (Virginia Beach, VA).

1. Sea Fever, a 90' cabin-class dive boat will be coming up here in June.
See:
http://www.sea fever.com to take a look at the boat. Sea Fever will be
chartered out of Lynnhaven Dive (757-481-7949).
2. Flying Fish, a 60' crew boat will be active around the end of January.
Jay and Adonis will be doing tech trips, but there is no compressor at
the moment.
3. Miss Lindsey is getting a new muffler system, so you can leave your
ear plugs behind (we hope) it should be ready in Feb.

Virginia Beach, Va. is really becoming a hotbed of tech activity, and
this is no surprise considering how many world class tech dives there are
in the area.

We were presented with Ken Claytons dive schedule. Ken is planning on
doing some tech charters a little less extreme then what we are used to
hearing him do, so contact Lynnhaven for details.

We discussed Capt. JT Barkers planned trip to the Ostfriesland and
Frankford in June, this should be quite a trip, 4 straight days of tech
diving off the Miss Lindsey.

There is a planned trip to Lake Rawlings to brush up on technique and
fine-tune gear so we can spend our ocean dives diving and not messing
with gear problems.

After this there was a show and tell of dive knifes and placement and a
technique of using a bicycle innertube to attach a Remora knife to the
belt of a harness was shown. Then a discussion of different types of lift
bags followed with discussion of different types and styles.

For the fun part a demonstration of how easy it is to break a zip tie
followed with instruction of using wreck reel line to attach gear by
"guess who". A certain amount of healthy discussion ensued. But, hey,
when you're right, you're right, right?

The topic of O2 narcosis came up with some examples of functionality
problems on divers on a nitrox vs. air taken from a recent dive trip. I
was pretty much the consensus that O2 has at least as much narcosis
potential as nitrogen.

Finally we watched an interesting tape of 6 years of diving on the
Skyclift, a large freighter sunk as an artificial reef off of Southern
Florida. All of us were amazed at how easy it is to dive deep in crystal
clear, blood warm waters. While the wreck was at a bottom depth of 200',
most of the divers were using single tanks and pony's. I think all of us
in the room were picturing the same wreck in our conditions, i.e. 5-10'
vis, 48F water temps, 15 hour boat ride and clouds of fishing nets and
buoys all over the place. Man, those S.Fla boys sure have some cake
diving going on down there...

Until next month-

 Jim
