Dave asked what would they hydro dynamic effect of cylinders moving "butt
first".  They *should* have less drag, not more.  Generally blunt leading,
sharp trailing, has the lowest drag and upside down cylinders are closer
to that than right side up ones are.  (look at a jumbo jet blunt front,
sharp tail)  If your cylinders have a round bottom, then they would have
even less drag.  Sharp leading edges are only used when the fluid is
being compressed by the movement of the object.  (jet fighters etc)  I can't
swim that fast without causing silting ;)
