John I concur with your sentements. Whilst the cave diving over here in the UK is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ANIMAL to the US stuff, the tech diving scene is covering similar ground. Most of the people that are doing the serious stuff operate one of two systems. 1. Manifolded doubles with two take offs. One reg has a std length hose on, one has a 2 metre hose. The dive is done on the std. length hose. In an out of air/equipment malfunction situation the affected diver will either grab the reg you are breathing from, or grab the one on the long hose. Either way they have gas!. Then you can either switch once breathing is established or leave well alone. 2. Independant doubles: since continuous reg switching is required to persue the 'thirds' rule it is a similar situation. The diver 'in the mire!' will go for what they go for!!!!!. You can then sort out the swapping of regs etc when things have settled down a little. As a matter of record I prefer manifolded to independant as regards gas management.
