Greetings all! As I was going about my daily business today, a few thoughts came across my mind, and I figured what better place to have the validity of my thinking put to the test than right here on the list! So, I'm wandering through the local department store picking up tinsel, stockings, etc... and I started wondering if I might apply some DIR principles (or the whole SYSTEM, since you can't pick and choose pieces of a PROVEN SYSTEM) to my holiday decorating about the house. The first thought I had was in regards to a recent post about how just because you had always done something one way, and no one you knew had been killed because of it, that was the way to go. So I began to wonder if I really should be using those $1.89 a package wire ornament hangars, or if there was a better way. I wound up using ordinary office paper clips instead. They seemed so much simpler...I mean, why introduce more possible failure points? go with what's tried and true, right? On top of all that, they serve multiple purposes! (I mean, I can't signal my buddy in a cave with them (or have you come up with that technique as well, JJ?) but if I happen to need to secure several greetings cards, well...I've got just the tool right there on the tree! Next I came to the lights. I couldn't find any that came with nylon webbing loops on the side so that I could slide them over my waist strap, but I did find some cool looking long, bubbling bulbs. But as I was about to pick them up, a guy (obvious stroke) next to me grabbed about 10 packages, mumbling something about some really old dinosaur of a guy swore by them and thought they were the best. I immediately realized the convoluted strokery of the design, and put the thought out of my head. I've gone with a simple, one piece strand of non-flashing white lights. Oh, and none of those multi plugs where you string one to the next. No...one strand...no quick releases! What I'm looking for is advice on the tree and the stockings. I kinda like the look of some of the flocked white artificial trees (especially here in Key West...I miss the snow!) but it does seem like a bit of over engineering for a rather simple idea. Should I go with a real tree? And on the stockings...do I get the fancy knitted ones, or go with the basic red and white felt things for $.99??? (Oh, or howabout the Bert, Ernie, and Big Bird ones I saw? They're made by a big name manufacturer, so they must be good, right??? Any advice list members could offer would be greatly appreciated! Thanks... -Case Harris diveman@cy*.co* Oh, and you'll all be pleased to know that instead of duct taping or zip-tying the garland to my balcony rail, I tied it up with cave line!!!! (See? I learn all kinds of useful stuff on here!) -- \ \ ^_ \ \ Case E.
