I had a private discussion (if you can call a one-way bone-headed insultfest a discussion) with a personal preference type and something occurred to me about their standard argument. Here are some examples: ----------- DIR- Use a woven nylon string tied around the neck and hose clamped at the bottom. Attach stainless steel bolt snaps with the string. Justification: The string allows you to cut away the stage should it get hopelessly tangled in something or you get keyholed. The configuration allows the stage to assume a naturally streamlined position for minimum drag. PP- Use a cockring around the neck of the bottle and a D ring hoseclamped to the bottom. Then a double bolt snap or carabiner to connect to the harness and D-ring hoseclamped to their tank. Oh and make sure you have a plastic quick release on your main harness. Justification: I've always done it this way and I'm not dead yet. Plus I don't know anybody who was killed doing it this way. ------------ DIR- Use standard wings with your drysuit as backup flotation in cold water and buoyant tanks and a weight belt in warm water. Justification: Streamlining, balance, simplification of your rig and true redundancy. PP- Use dual bladder wings with bungees. Justification: I've always done it this way and I'm not dead yet. I've heard of someone getting killed this way, but I did not know them personally, so it don't count. ------------- DIR- Use a cannister light attached to your belt and a cord only long enought to reach the adjustable lighthead on your left hand. Justification: Using a cannister light allows a streamlined rig, use of a light while using that hand for other thing (via a goodman handle) decent burn time and a nice bright bulb. Plus you can drape the cord around your neck and the light naturally shines down on what your are working on. Adjustablilty is great for compensating varying vis conditions, and missions and singling. PP- Buy a UK or pelcan light or some nicad rechargeable handle light. Justification: I've always used one and I'm not dead yet. And handle lights are really cheap. ------------ DIR- Use isolated manifolded doubles. Justification: The manifold gives you a total air picture at all times and offers your entire air supply should you have to share your air. PP- Use independent doubles. Justification: I've always done it this way and I'm not dead yet. Oh, and its cheaper. ------------ The only argument that you PP types have is "I've always done it this way and I'm not dead yet" or it's cheap. Beyond that no logic, no discussion, no reason. Why is this? Can anybody explain this to me?
