Greg, Everyone that starts out with the WKPP is a defacto student. The approach that we take is one of apprenticeship. This means that nobody starts out over their head or moves up the ladder until they have demonstrated their competance over a period of time. Since nobody is making a buck doing this, there is no motivation to premote people until they have demonstrated their ability. When I started out, I thought I was a big shot gas diver since I had an IANTD trimix card. Fortunately, nobody in the WKPP agreed with me and I had to cool my jets and learn the skills that have gradually turned me into a competant gas diver. There is no doubt in my mind that this retraining has made me a much better/safer/capable diver. Also, since it was done in a gradual fashion, without an instroketor in a rush to get his $$$$, I have never been placed in a dangerous situation that I was not well prepared to handle. More to the point, the retraining has helped me to avoid such situations in the first place. This is why we have the safety record that we have in spite of the fact that our typical dives are significantly more complicated than most other technical dives. We are the best at what we do because we train to be the best at what we do. -John > John Strohm, > By your logic the gear that the cavers in Yucatan are using must be > great because of a minimum number of incidents compared to number of > dives.
