There are all kinds of versions of the "Balleen" accident out there, but only three common denominators that stand out : 1) 170 foot air dive. This may seem like nothing , but this is the insideous accident zone : you can't fell the impairment so it seems OK. 2) boat anchored with captain, crew, and everyone diving at once - real smart. 3) everyone "doing their own thing" . All of the other variations are functions of the above three, which is a function of the piss-poor attitude currently in play in both tec and rec diving. In discussing this accident, we now learn of four more deaths up there that are not considered "tec", so not worthy of mention on these lists. All of the deaths make it to the papers, and the Coast Guard, and this is why diving and the dive industry are themselves in a nose dive. -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
