Message to members of the techdiver listserv: On Sunday, October 25, 1998, Ken Clayton, aided by a three person support= team, successfully dove the wreck of the Panam, approximately 42 nautical= miles northeast of Morehead City, NC at a depth of approximately 500 fsw.= The dive was to the stern section just forward of the superstructure. The dive was done using air, Heliair 9/52 and Nitrox 40 and 80 for deco. The Panam, described in Gary Gentile's Shipwrecks of North Carolina from Hatteras Inlet South, was a 438' tanker torpedoed by the German U-129 on May 4, 1943. The October 25 dive was accomplished in the first available weather window/boat availability/support team availabliity since an ill-fated attempt 6/4/96 when Doug Summerhill did not return from the dive. In the 1996 attempt, Clayton reached 456 fsw and the bow section was visible, however he did not reach the wreck or the bottom. Message language on the techdiver listserv following the 1996 attempt prompted Clayton to file a lawsuit in a Delaware court against Roderick Farb which was later dismissed for improper venue. A detailed account of the dive is being prepared by support diver Jeff Hewlett for release on the internet.
