Associated Press, 10/18/98

HULL, Mass. (AP) - A diver was pronounced dead after he surfaced from a deep
dive on Sunday, the Coast Guard said.

Coast Guard officials received a radio call around 10 a.m. from the crew of a
recreational boat who reported that a diver off their boat had surfaced with
no vital signs, Coast Guard Lt. Pat Cook said.

The male diver, whose name was not immediately released, was diving in
130-foot waters, seven miles northeast of Hull.

The diver was pronounced dead at Massachusetts General Hospital, Cook said.

Since I have seen nothing posted on this yet, I wanted to make a note of the
following:

"Man dives during dive on harbor wreck"

See http://www.boston.com/news/daily/18/diver.htm for initial details.

According to the local news last night (Channel 7),

A boat went out yesterday with 6 people, and came back with 5. Of the 6
people, 5 went diving, and one woman stayed with the boat. The divers were
believed to be diving to around 160ft. Shortly (no figure given) into the
dive, one diver shot to the surface, unconscious. The woman was unable to get
the man onto the boat (Symbiosis), and radioed the Coast Guard for help. 20
minutes later the CG arrived, got the man out of the water, and transported
him to shore, where he was pronounced dead by EMS.

Some reports suggest that the man became entangled and struggled to get free.
Why he shot to the surface, and what the cause of death was are still unknown.

Some early thoughts: Where was his buddy? If there were truly 5 divers, was
he solo, or part of a three-man buddy team? Where were the other divers when
he got entangled (if he did), and when he shot to the surface? Why did they
not notice his absence?

The pictures taken during the newscast last night at one point showed a bank
of AL80's (not sure if the shot was of the boat in question or just a
fill-in), typical red and yellow dinged up rental gear. Were the divers
really at 160ft, and if so, why.

The boat was out of Beverly, was about 7 miles off the coast of Hull. I do
not know what the divers goal was.
