Hey Art, To my knowledge there are about three different locking setups. First is the swivel that you wrote about, and if you get one from a quality manufacturer there is little or no space between the lock and the carabiner so there should not be a major problem with sand or debris. The second is a snap type where the locking mechanism is secured by a dime sized button (great for climbing but pretty difficult with 7 mil gloves on) and the last one has sort of like a slide lock through the opening device to keep it from coming open( its called an autolock). Ive never tried the last one with my scuba gear but it does seem to be very secure on land. Ill enclose a link to a web page so that you can look at what I'm referring to.
